This condition can involve the heart muscle, heart valves or lining of the heart. Most people who develop endocarditis have heart disease of the valves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risk factors for developing endocarditis include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Injection drug use<\/li>\n<li>Permanent central venous access lines<\/li>\n<li>Prior valve surgery<\/li>\n<li>Recent dental surgery<\/li>\n<li>Weakened valves<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bacterial infection is the most common source of endocarditis. However, it can also be caused by fungi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms of Endocarditis include:<\/strong> (may develop slowly or suddenly)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abnormal urine color<\/li>\n<li>Blood in the urine<\/li>\n<li>Chills<\/li>\n<li>Excessive sweating<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Heart murmur<\/li>\n<li>Joint pain<\/li>\n<li>Muscle aches and pains<\/li>\n<li>Night sweats<\/li>\n<li>Nail abnormalities (splinter hemorrhages under the nails)<\/li>\n<li>Paleness<\/li>\n<li>Red, painless skin spots on the palms and soles<\/li>\n<li>Red, painful nodes in the pads of the fingers and toes<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath with activity<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of feet, legs, abdomen<\/li>\n<li>Weakness<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Endocarditis is inflammation of the inside lining of the heart chambers and heart valves (endocardium).
